Itinerary

On Day 1 of our Machu Picchu by car tour, we’ll start the tour at Machu Picchu Reservations Office at 6:30 am in Cusco for a scenic 6-hour drive to Hidroelectrica. Along the way, we’ll stop in Hidroelectrica for a delicious lunch. After lunch, continue the 3 hours trek to Aguas Calientes.

Prepare yourself for a picturesque 3-hour, 11 km trek along the flat terrain to the base town of Machu Picchu. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we’ll take you to your hotel, where you can freshen up and relax. In the evening, enjoy a scrumptious dinner in the town and get ready for an exciting day ahead exploring Machu Picchu.

On Day 2 of our 2-day Machu Picchu by car tour, you have the option to walk or take a bus to the citadel. If you choose to take the bus, you’ll need to purchase a ticket in Aguas Calientes for $12. Those who prefer to walk should start their ascent at 4:30 AM after breakfast to reach the main entrance by 6 AM.

Regardless of your chosen mode of transportation, the meeting point will be at the main entrance of Machu Picchu at 6 AM. Your guide will lead you on a tour through the Inca site, sharing the history and stories behind this iconic location. After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore the area on your own.

After visiting Machu Picchu, begin your return journey to Cusco by starting the trek from the citadel back to Hidroelectrica at around 10:00 AM. The trek will take approximately 3.5 hours, allowing you to reach Hidroelectrica in time to board the car for Cusco between 2:00 and 2:30 PM.

The drive from Hidroelectrica to Cusco will take around 6 hours, during which you can relax and reflect on your incredible Machu Picchu experience. Upon arrival in Cusco, you’ll have completed your memorable 2-day Machu Picchu by car tour.

The tour involves a 2-3 hour trek from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes and potentially a 1.5-2 hour hike to Machu Picchu. Participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable with walking long distances.

HOW LONG DOES THE VISIT TO MACHUPICCHU LAST?

The visit lasts two hours. In the first hour you will have a guided tour of the citadel. Then, you will have the rest of the time to walk freely around the citadel.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK THE TOUR?

We receive reservations at least 48 hours in advance. However, spaces are limited and are always subject to availability. Tickets to the citadel of Machu Picchu are in high demand and in some cases are sold out months in advance. For this reason, we recommend that you make your reservation as far in advance as possible.

WHAT IS THE CLIMATE LIKE IN MACHUPICCHU?

Machu Picchu is located between the Andes Mountains and the Amazon jungle, having a warm and temperate climate, with an average minimum temperature of 12 °C and an average maximum temperature of 24 °C. From April to October is the dry season in the place, that is, during that period there is a lower probability of rain, while from November to March is the rainy season, that is, during that period there is a higher probability of rain but it is not good to be confident because it is a subtropical zone.

IS IT NECESSARY TO TAKE THE TRAIN ON THE TOUR?

No, the train from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes is optional on the tour. Most tourists choose to walk this 10 kilometer stretch. The train ticket has a tourist cost in US dollars.

HOW IS THE TOUR GUIDE SERVICE?

The tour guide service is shared. The guide waits for the tourists in the town of Aguas Calientes and accompanies them in Machu Picchu (tour of the archaeological site of approximately 2 hours).

DOES THE TOUR INCLUDE THE VISIT TO HUAYNA PICCHU?

No, the tour does not include the entrance to Huayna Picchu. The entrance fee included is ‘Machupicchu Solo’, which allows the tour to the main sites as well as the classic postcard photo in Machupicchu. To book the Machupicchu + Huayna Picchu mountain tour you have to book at least one month in advance as tickets sell out very quickly.

IN WHAT LANGUAGE IS THE TOUR GUIDE SERVICE?

The tour includes tour guide service in Spanish and English. For guides in other languages a private service must be contracted at salkantaycompany@gmail.com.

HOW IS THE HOTEL INCLUDED IN THE TOUR?

The hotel included in the tour is a tourist hotel service of three, four stars or if you wish upon request you can also book a tourist hostel in the town of Aguas Calientes. It offers clean single and double rooms, with hot shower, wifi internet and more.
